Principal Arrested For Putting Finger In Female Student’s Private Part;… Calls It Virginity Test.....

What could have prompted a secondary school principal to conduct virginity tests on her female students with her bare hands remains a mystery to parents of the students of Ajuwon High School, near Akuta in Ogun state.

The principal was dragged to Ajuwon police station by parents of the students for carrying out virginity tests on their wards without their permission.

DailyPost gathered that the students took to the streets last week in protest of the principal’s action which took place in her office.

It was learnt that the principal, Mrs Aladeojebi accused most of them of promiscuity and later forced them to her office to carry out a virginity test on them with her bare hands.

An SS1 student who was in tears while narrating her ordeal to her parents accused the principal of using her hands to puncture her ‘honey pot’.

Subsequently, other parents were informed and the matter was reported to Ajuwon police station.

DailyPost gathered that Mrs Aladeojebi reportedly confessed of inviting a trained nurse to conduct the test, emphasising that an egg was used and not her hands.

“It is totally unacceptable for a school principal to conduct virgin test. Is that part of the school syllabus or was it ratified by the Ogun state government?” one of the witnesses asked in a rhetoric mood.

Furthermore, a parent stressed that the action was tantamount to sexual abuse, adding that most parents feared the case might be swept under the carpet.

However, all efforts to get an official statement from the police proved abortive as at press time.

Mom Finds Seven Deadly Snake In 3 Year Old Son's Wardrobe....

A three-year-old boy had a lucky escape after his mother found a box of seven deadly snakes in his wardrobe.
Kyle Cumming had found the snake eggs in his garden in Townsville in Queensland, Australia and was given a takeaway container to put them in.

Several weeks later his mother Donna Sim was shocked when she opened the bedroom wardrobe to discover the box full of recently hatched eastern brown snakes – the world’s second deadliest species.
Wildlife carers said Kyle was very fortunate as his mother discovered the eastern brown snake babies before he took them out to play or before the hatchlings had grown strong enough to push open the lid by themselves.
Ms Sim said she had given Kyle the takeaway container when he found the eggs but had not thought more of it until she found the snakes in her son’s bedroom.
‘I was pretty shocked, particularly because I don't like snakes,’ she said.
The family took the snakes to a local sanctuary where they were released back into the wild.
The eastern brown snake is widely considered the second most venomous snake in the world, behind the inland taipan.
They are common in Australia and are responsible for a majority of lethal snake bites recorded in the country.

“This thing is monstrous” – Discovery of 17-foot python (with 87 eggs) raises concerns....

A 17.5 foot Burmese python was discovered last week in the Everglades in Florida and is believed to be the largest ever in the state. The snake  was examined by scientists at the Florida Museum of Natural History and found to weigh 164.5-pounds, after it was brought there from the Everglades National Park. It was also pregnant with a record 87 eggs.
Burmese pythons are native to south-east Asia, and were originally kept as pets before being released into the wild. “They were here 25 years ago, but in very low numbers and it was difficult to find one because of their cryptic behavior,” Kenneth Krysko, manager of the museum’s herpetology collection said. “Now, you can go out to the Everglades nearly any day of the week and find a Burmese python. We’ve found 14 in a single day.”
The reptiles are said to be responsible for the dwindling population of mammals in the Everglades, leading to increased concerns about safety of other animals. “Pythons are wreaking havoc on one of America’s most beautiful, treasured, and naturally bountiful ecosystems,” said U.S. Geological Survey Director Marci McNutt in a statement in January this year. Research revealed that the raccoon population declined 99.3%, the opossum population 98.9%, and the bobcat population 87.5%, due to the pythons. This latest discovery is even more worrying for researchers because of the number of eggs discovered in the creature. “I think one of the important facts about this animal is its reproductive capability,” said park wildlife biologist Skip Snow. “There are not many records of how many eggs a large female snake carries in the wild. This shows they’re a really reproductive animal, which aids in their invasiveness.”
Krysko also expressed his concerns, saying, “This thing is monstrous. It’s about a foot wide. It means there’s nothing stopping them and the native wildlife are in trouble.”

Nasa to send new rover to Mars in 2020.....

The US space agency (Nasa) says it will launch a new rover to Mars in 2020.
The vehicle will be based on its Curiosity robot, which landed on the Red Planet in August.
CuriosityNasa expects to re-use many of the technologies that worked so successfully in getting the one-tonne spacecraft down into the huge equatorial bowl known as Gale Crater.
This included a rocket-powered crane that lowered Curiosity to the surface on nylon cords.
The announcement of a follow-up robot was made here at the American Geophysical Union (AGU) Fall Meeting, the world's largest annual gathering for Earth and planetary scientists, and a major showcase for Nasa-led research.
It was communicated by the agency's associate administrator for science, John Grunsfeld.
"The new rover's going to be based on the [Curiosity] chassis, and it's really building on the tremendous success of the engineering of Curiosity," he said.
"It will have new instruments. We're going to put out a letter to colleagues to ask for folks who want to be in the science definition team. And the idea is to work through the winter and spring, and have an announcement of opportunity [in] mid-summer for actual instruments, because while 2020 might seem a long way off, it's really not. Curiosity was about a decade in the works."
Nasa's budget for planetary science, and Mars research in particular, has been squeezed of late, forcing the Americans to pull back on their commitments to two European Red Planet ventures in 2016 and 2018. But Mr Grunsfeld said there was scope in the financial outlook for a major mission at the end of the decade.
Critical to its affordability will be the intention to re-use the Curiosity template.
The 2020 rover will share many aspects of its design with the current robot, most notably its novel entry, descent and landing (EDL) system.
This included a hovering "skycrane" that was able to put Curiosity down with pin-point accuracy in Gale Crater.
The agency also has a collection of spare parts left over from the build of Curiosity. Among these is a spare nuclear battery.
"That will become the prime for the 2020 mission, and there was an engineering test unit that we will now try to upgrade to a back-up," Mr Grunsfeld said.
The budget for the 2020 vehicle will be about $1.5bn (at 2015 prices) compared with the $2.5bn quoted for the cost of Curiosity at launch last year.
John Grunsfeld has already discussed the mission with his opposite number at the European Space Agency - Alvaro Gimenez Canete - who he said was excited about the possibility of participating in the project.
"It will be an international mission as all our missions are," the former astronaut added.
Curiosity landed on Mars on 6 August. It is investigating Gale for signs that past environments could have supported microbial life in the distant past.
Its major discovery so far is the realisation that it touched down in an ancient river-bed system where water once flowed, perhaps waist deep.
Given the longevity of Curiosity's nuclear battery, there is every expectation that it will still be operating when its near-copy arrives in 2021.
Mars rover (Nasa)
  • (A) Curiosity will trundle around its landing site looking for interesting rock features to study. Its top speed is about 4cm/s
  • (B) This mission has 17 cameras. They will identify particular targets, and a laser will zap those rocks to probe their chemistry
  • (C) If the signal is significant, Curiosity will swing over instruments on its arm for close-up investigation. These include a microscope
  • (D) Samples drilled from rock, or scooped from the soil, can be delivered to two hi-tech analysis labs inside the rover body
  • (E) The results are sent to Earth through antennas on the rover deck. Return commands tell the rover where it should drive next.

68-Year-Old Professor Of Physics Convicted Of Smuggling Cocaine...

A court in Argentina has convicted an Oxford educated University of North Carolina professor of attempting to smuggle four pounds of cocaine into the United States.
Paul Frampton, a 68-year-old esteemed professor of physics and astronomy, says he thought he was flying to South America to meet with a bikini model but ended up getting caught in what they call a “honey trap.”
Frampton flew to Bolivia from North Carolina earlier this year after communicating with someone who claimed to be Denise Milani, winner of Miss Bikini World 2007. She never showed up. Instead, Frampton says he was met by a man who gave him a suitcase, identifying himself as an intermediary for Milani, and instructing him to take it to her in Argentina.
Once there, he says he could not find her and decided to board a plane home, with that suitcase in hand. Police opened it up at the airport and found more than four pounds of cocaine inside.
“He has a high IQ, is well-known and very distinguished in the field of physics and other scientific areas, but when it comes to common sense he scored a zero,” said former DC homicide investigator Rod Wheeler.
The Argentinean court sentenced Frampton to serve four years and eight months in custody after prosecutors there presented evidence of text messages they say Frampton sent to the person he thought was the model, saying, “I’m worried about the sniffer dogs,” and “I’m looking after your special little suitcase.”
The University of North Carolina has cut off Frampton’s salary in a move that prompted dozens of his colleagues at the university to sign a letter of protest to administrators. “As more information about his case becomes available … it becomes more and more obvious that Paul was the innocent, although very gullible, victim of a scam,” the joint letter said.
Many wrote separate letters of reference on a website they created to support the embattled professor, who is hoping to serve his time under house arrest in Argentina at a friend’s apartment.
From prison Frampton has said, “It does seem unfair that an innocent scam victim is treated as a professional drug smuggler.” Frampton’s Argentinean lawyer told ABC News she would have no comment until having a chance to review the judge’s complete ruling, which she expects to be released early next week.
However, it appears this is not the first time Frampton has been in hot water over a woman. The Telegraph, a London based paper that serves Great Britain , reported that friends say he once met another woman online and flew to China to marry her. This time, the woman was real, but after seeing Frampton, she reportedly canceled the wedding.

Chelsea Confirm Signing Of Fluminense Defender...

Chelsea have agreed terms with Fluminense to sign Wallace in the January transfer window, with the full-back to join the squad in the summer.
The 18-year-old defender is a former Brazil Under-17s international colleague of new team-mate Lucas Piazon and moves to Stamford Bridge for an undisclosed fee.
An attack-minded right-back with pace, the youngster has played only 18 league games for the Brazilian side, having made his senior debut earlier in 2012.
However, he has already won three trophies with his club and starred for his country in the Under-17s South American Championship in 2011.
Having joined Fluminense in 2005, Wallace has drawn comparisons to another full-back produced by the club, Real Madrid’s Marcelo.

42 Year Old Teacher Sleeps With 5 Underage Boys, Lures Them With Her Pictures...

A teaching assistant had unprotected sex with five teenage boys in her care and sent them pictures of herself playing with sex toys.
Married Emma Webb, 42, performed sex acts on the pupils – aged 15 to 17 – during free period and detention at the Berkshire school.
She groomed them by taking them out for meals at Kentucky Fried Chicken and giving them lifts to school, Reading Crown Court heard.
The supply teacher and mentor, who admitted a total of 30 charges relating to the offences involving five boys at the secondary school, even joked with one boy about having his baby.
Sentencing the tearful teacher to 32 months in jail, Judge John Reddihough said: ‘All of these offences involved serious breaches of trust that was placed in you as a study supervisor at the school in question.
‘You were expected to support and assist the five boys concerned and you were a mentor to at least two of them.
‘Instead you undoubtedly groomed them for sexual purposes by buying them food and presents, inviting them to your home and driving them to and from school.’
The first youngster to catch the eye of the mother of two was a 15-year-old, who she would question about his sexual experiences. The pair were so close they drew the attention of fellow pupils.
‘Others were saying they should get a bed in the classroom, it appeared she enjoyed that jest,’ said Simon Heptonstall, prosecuting. ‘She said she liked his bum and squeezed it.
‘She continued sexual texting when her husband was not around and texted him saying, “fancy a play?”.’
The court heard that Webb told the boy if he told anyone about the texts she would lose her job and that her plumber husband Andy ‘had a history of violence’, so the youngster would ‘end up with no kneecaps.’
Webb started asking the boy to visit her and said he was ‘a special boy’, said Mr Heptonstall.
Webb then moved on to another student, aged 16. After taking him to KFC with a group of boys in his year, Webb started texting him and asking him to go to her home for sex.
When the boy obliged, Webb performed a sex act on him, saying ‘we shouldn’t be doing this’ before he left following a call from his mother.
On another visit during one of his free periods, she again performed a sex act. The pair then began to meet up around twice a week for sex when he was not in lessons.
‘There was never any use of contraception,’ said Mr Heptonstall.
The third boy was sent to the school’s intervention room, where Webb lifted up her skirt and told him to touch her sexually, which he did until the school bell sounded 10 or 15 minutes later.
She told him not to tell anyone, and followed that up by sending him explicit photographs by mobile, the court heard.
On another occasion she asked the boy to walk her dog with her and had sex with him on her staircase, in what the court was told was the teenager’s first sexual experience.
Webb had shown the fourth boy explicit photographs of herself using sex toys after he was sent to the intervention room for misbehaving.
‘He was caught drawing a penis when he was doodling in class,’ said Mr Heptonstall. ‘She bluntly asked to see his.’
The pair later went on to have unprotected sexual intercourse, prompting Webb to say to the boy ‘imagine if we had black babies now’.
Webb also gave the fifth boy lifts to school, and the court heard she made him feel ‘as though he was the only one who cared for her.’
At a school prom, the pair posed for photographs where Webb had her feather boa draped over him, which the boy’s mother described as featuring them as ‘looking like a couple’.
‘She referred to him as her baby and said she loved him,’ said Mr Heptonstall. ‘He would walk the dog with her regularly, two or three times a week, and on one occasion they would go to her house.’
Webb was suspended from the school, which cannot be identified for legal reasons, and investigated after another teacher saw a message from the boy where he told Webb that he loved her.
The court was told that Webb initially denied that anything untoward had happened, but admitted that she was a tactile person.
Webb, who held her head in her hands as the details of her offences were read out, looked tired and red-eyed as she sat in the dock, dressed in a grey striped top.
She admitted to 16 counts relating to sex with three of the boys at an earlier court hearing, and to a further 14 charges relating to the other two boys prior to her sentencing hearing today.
The teacher admitted four counts of causing or inciting sexual activity with a child and six counts of causing or inciting sexual activity with a child by a position of trust.
She also pleaded guilty to three counts of causing a child to watch a sex act by viewing a sexual image, one count of sexual activity with a child and 16 counts of sexual activity with a child in a position of trust between September 2, 2009 and May 1, 2012.
She denied a further charge of perverting the course of justice, which the court was told would lie on file.
None of the boys can be identified for legal reasons. Most told police they had not been affected by Webb’s activities, although one said he felt he had been taken advantage of.
Jennifer Edwards, defending, said Webb had been good at her job, and that the boys had said she was kind to them.
She said Webb regretted her actions and hoped to rebuild her marriage after her release from prison, but could not give a reason why she had embarked on sexual relationships with pupils.
‘Why on earth did she do this? There was nothing for her to gain from having sexual play with boys at her school,’ said Ms Edwards. ‘There was everything for her to lose and nothing to gain.’
She added: ‘They are young and vulnerable but these are young boys on the road to manhood.’
Ms Edwards suggested her offending was in part linked to the murder of her brother several years ago.
‘Each of the boys she became involved with, it appears she spoke to them about her lost brother,’ she said. ‘Perhaps she was looking for some sort of solace.’
No details of the murder were heard by the court.
Ms Edwards added that the judge had been sent a ‘heartfelt’ letter by Webb, plus others in support from other people, including her parents, her children and her husband, who is standing by her.
Judge Reddihough sentenced Webb to 32 months in prison, after he took off a third of her sentence for an early guilty plea.
He told her she could expect to serve half of that behind bars, including the 168 days she has already spent in custody.
‘It may be that to some extent the boys were over 16 at the time of some of the offences, ‘ said the judge. ‘But they were under 18 and you were in a position of trust towards them.
‘What you did will have had an adverse effect on the complainants.
‘There is a real risk they will have twisted attitudes towards females and sex, and be confused as to the appropriate boundaries between adults and children or young people in their care.’
Despite attending court for all of Webb’s previous appearances, her husband was not present today.
A woman who answered the door at their home in Reading said that he was at work.

Mark Zuckerberg made $3.5 billion last month (November)...

Yes, you heard right. $3.5 billion in just one month. Facebook's stock shot up from $21.08 a share on the first day of trading in November to $28 a share at the end of the day Friday, its highest price since July. Zuckerberg, who owns about 504 million shares of Facebook stock, gained about $3.48 billion as a result...

When Facebook first went public at $38 a share in May, Zuckerberg’s shares were worth $19.1 billion. In the following months, the stock dropped to less than half that IPO price to $17.55 in late August, pushing Zuckerberg’s net worth down to $8.84 billion.

Since then, Facebook’s stock has recovered in fits and starts and so has Zuckerberg’s wealth. November proved to be by far the most robust growth month for the stock to date, thanks to two big factors. First, the company had a strong earnings report in late October, which showed that Facebook was making progress in monetizing mobile. Secondly, the second and largest lockup period for stocks held by employees finally expired in the middle of November, which was something investors had been dreading for months and arguably held down the stock price.

As of last Friday, Zuckerberg’s net worth was $14.1 billion and will likely only continue to grow in December.

Students Drowsy After Drinking Bob Marley ‘Anti-Energy Drink’....

A group of teachers were shocked when some of their students ended up running to the nurse’s office after sampling a drink dubbed as Bob Marley’s ‘anti-energy drink.’
Reports say students at a New Jersey middle school became ill after drinking a beverage called Marley’s Mellow Mood, named after the deceased reggae star, which they purchased in the school cafeteria. The drink is described as the ‘anti-energy drink’ because 100% natural, calming botanicals.
Fox 5 News reports some students spit up and threw up while others said they were drowsy and lethargic after consuming it.
The label of the drink reads: “The all natural botanical ingredients in this product have been specially blended to mellow your mood, and may cause drowsiness. Best enjoyed when you are ready to relax. Do not mix with alcohol. Not intended for children…”
A letter was sent home to parents from The William R. Satz School in Holmdel saying, “Several students went to our nurse’s office to report symptoms of nausea, headaches, light-headiness, and a feeling of lethargy.”
The drinks have since been removed from the schools...

Pigs Could Grow Human Organs By 2013......

Organs grown in genetically modified pigs could be transplanted into humans in as little as two years' time, scientists believe.

A persistent shortage of human organs has led experts to investigate methods of using pigs created with human genes, so that body parts grown in them can be harvested for use in patients without their immune systems rejecting them. Now scientists say that a trial transplanting pigs' corneas into humans with eye problems could begin by 2013.

Writing in today's edition of The Lancet, the Pittsburgh University team predict: "With new genetically modified pigs becoming available that
are likely to improve the outcome of cellular and corneal xenotransplantation further, we believe that clinical trials will be justified within the next two to three years."

Transplantation of larger organs, such as lungs, hearts and kidneys, is likely to take longer, due to problems with clots forming as well as too much bleeding, animal studies show.

"These problems mean that the longest survival time for pig organs in non-human primates to date ranges from a few days for lungs to around six to eight months for hearts, and trials of solid organ transplants of this nature in humans are likely to be several years away," they write.

But they add a one-off transplant may happen sooner. "Life-saving transplants of a pig liver or heart could be justified as a bridge until a human organ becomes available."

Two Disabled Almajiri Women Fight Over A Man....

Armed with a knife and cutlass, a disabled woman living in Kamarjiji Vilage in Nigeria’s Federal Capital of Abuja stormed the home of another disabled woman, also living in the village on Airport Road, Abuja, on 21 November.

Was she on a mission to kill? Not likely. What was clear was that Aisha Yunusa had come to threateningly accuse her victim, Hauwa Musa and her daughter of dating her husband and of trying to snatch him. And she wanted them to leave her husband alone.

Though no blood was spilled on this day, the police arrested the attacker, Aisha, and brought her before a Grade One Area Court, Lugbe, Abuja. Her would be victim, Hauwa Musa accused her of attempting to kill her when the case was mentioned 28 November.

Hauwa, a widow, wanted the court to compel Aisha to desist from carrying out her threat to kill or hurt her as well as pay her the sum of N200,000 as damages for defaming her and her daughter.

Hauwa also said that the defendant threatened to kill the two of them, burn their house and harm them if they did not stop ‘seeing’ her husband.

Aisha denied all the accusations against her by Hauwa. But one wonders why she went to Hauwa’s home with a cutlass and a knife, in the first place.

In between the adjourned dates in the court, chief and elders of Kamarjiji village intervened to settle the dispute.

And thus when the parties went back to court Monday 3 December, they told the court they have agreed to settle outside of its confines.

They therefore wanted the case withdrawn.

Hauwa however gave a condition that the case would return if they were unable to reach an amicable settlement.

The Judge, Haruna Manasawa, after hearing both parties in the suit, adjourned the case to 12 December for “report of settlement’’.

I Use Cocaine To Lubricate My Private Parts- Teenage Girl Tells Police....

A 19-year old Zimbabwean girl, famous for claiming that well-known businessman, Themba Hlongwane was having séx with his (Themba’s) employees, has been nabbed on allegations of selling the illicit cocaine drug.
Olga Carlos Joao Barcar subsequently appeared in court, facing a charge of dealing in dangerous drugs after 10g of illicit drug was found stashed in her shoes. She is said to have acknowledged possessing the sustance, claiming that she uses it to lubricate her privates.
The teenager was yanked before Harare magistrate Tendai Mahwe, who remanded her out of custody till December 6 for trial on US$200 bail, coupled with strict conditions. She was ordered to surrender her passport and present herself twice a week to the CID drugs section until the matter is finalised.
It is the State’s case that on 23 November at around 6pm, detectives from the CID drugs section received information to the effect that Olga was selling cocaine. The detectives reportedly launched a manhunt and located Olga at Chester Court along Fife Avenue and took her to her home in Mabelreign.
A thorough search was conducted in her bedroom and cream substance suspected to be cocaine was found stashed in her shoes. She allegedly admitted that the powder belonged to her and that she uses it to lubricate her privates. The girl was taken to the police station where the substance was found to be worth US$800 and weighed 10 grams.
The court heard that preliminary tests were done in her presence and proved that the substance was cocaine and it was sent to the forensic laboratory for analysis.

10 ways to get a flat stomach......

…the biggest problem with our noshing behavior is that snacks have become meals, and meals have become feasts.

Be the center of attention

For all the effort you’ve put into toning it–and for all the cupcakes you’ve given up to maintain it–your midsection should be as rock-hard as a diamond and just as much fun to show off. So why does it seem like your quest for a sexy stomach always hits a bump…right about belly-button level?
You’re not alone in feeling frustrated: Sixty-two percent of women say the body part they’re most self-conscious about is their belly. But don’t give up hope–just change your thinking. Turns out, some of the old food advice you’ve been following for years may actually be working against you, says Alan Aragon, a nutritionist in Westlake Village, California. The latest research is full of new culinary strategies for shrinking your stomach (and slimming down all over). After wading through the data to answer your most common questions, Aragon presents his core counsel.

Will eating smaller meals curb my hunger?

Contrary to what you’ve heard, the five-small-meals-a-day mantra doesn’t work for everyone. The new thinking? You’ll eat healthiest if you eat your way–meaning, if you prefer substantial meals fewer times a day, there’s no reason to force yourself to do the opposite, says Aragon. But while the number of meals doesn’t matter, their size does.
According to Purdue University researchers, the biggest problem with our noshing behavior is that snacks have become meals, and meals have become feasts. In the past 30 years, snack sizes have increased from 360 calories to a whopping 580! When you consider that the average woman snacks twice during each workday, you’re looking at almost 500 extra calories a day. In just two weeks, these oversize bites–no matter how “healthy” they are–can contribute to an extra pound of fat. The takeaway: However many times you eat, always make sure that you’re keeping an eye on your portions.

How do I know which fats are OK to eat?

It’s been scientifically proven: Eating fat helps you become slim, says Aragon. In fact, the Institute of Medicine recommends that fatty foods make up 20 to 35 percent of your total calories. This, of course, isn’t an invitation to head over to the nearest fast-food joint. You have to include the right fats–primarily monounsaturated fats (MUFAs) like nuts, avocados, and healthy oils–and stay away from processed foods that contain trans fats, such as baked goods. A report in the British Journal of Nutrition found that a MUFA-rich diet helped people lose small amounts of weight and body fat even when they didn’t change their calorie intake. What’s more, dieters who took a high-fat approach needed 25 fewer days to lose 10 pounds than those who used a high-carb approach, according to researchers at Johns Hopkins University–and that was on a diet of 30 percent fat! So go ahead and indulge (in moderation) in fatty foods that are good for your body, including beef (top round and sirloin), pork, eggs (yolks too), and reduced-fat sour cream and cheese.

Is counting calories the only way to guarantee a flat stomach?

What matters most for shedding belly fat boils down to calories in versus calories out. For sure, counting those suckers at every meal will help you stay consistent with a healthy eating plan, says Aragon–but it isn’t necessary to lose weight. If worrying about Every. Single. Calorie. is stressing you out, put away the calculator (research shows that stress itself can cause you to stuff your face). Instead, fill your plate with whole, energy-dense foods, such as lean protein, fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Because they pack a lot of nutrition into comparatively few calories, you’re able to eat more and feel full without expanding your waistline.

Do carbs cause tummy fat?

Despite what nearly every diet plan in the late ’90s led you to believe, carbs are not your enemy. Yes, if you overeat them, you’ll gain–just as with any other food. But when it comes to weight loss, your total calorie balance is what matters. If you eat more than you burn, the unused calories turn into fat that gets stored in your belly (and elsewhere), regardless of what particular foods those calories come from, says Aragon. That said, if just the sight of carb-heavy dishes melts your willpower into goo, avoiding them is the foolproof way to control your weight. More realistic, perhaps, is making sure most of your carbs are the complex kind found in whole grains and raw fruits and vegetables. Because these tend to fill you with fiber, it’s easier to eat them in controlled portions than it is with highly processed refined carbs like white bread, pasta, and rice.

Aren’t protein shakes just for bodybuilders?

Don’t be fooled by labels featuring ripped, bulked-up dudes. Anyone, jock or not, can benefit from the belly-flattening power of protein powder. Opt for whey protein over soy: According to a study in The Journal of Nutrition, participants whose diets included whey protein for 23 weeks had less body fat and a smaller waist than those who consumed soy protein. In fact, as strange as it sounds, dieters who included whey protein in their eating plan doubled their fat loss compared with those who ate the same number of calories but didn’t drink any shakes. To reveal your abs once and for all, try including a whey protein shake once a day or at least a few times a week.

I’m losing pounds but not inches. What’s wrong?

This usually means you’re not strength training or eating enough protein, says Aragon. Pick up some weights, and add six ounces of lean meat to your post-workout meal or mix two scoops of protein powder into a smoothie or yogurt. Each option yields about 40 grams of protein, the amount you need to lose fat while preserving metabolism-revving muscle.

Can I have dairy and still lose my belly?

Absolutely. In fact, cutting back on the amount of dairy you eat can signal your body to make more fat cells, according to a study in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. When you don’t have enough calcium in your body, it tries to hold on to what’s there. This triggers the release of a compound called calcitriol, which increases the production of fat cells. If you want fewer fat cells, eating extra calcium suppresses calcitriol, which breaks down fat and makes your fat cells leaner and your tummy flatter. So enjoy the moo juice, yogurt, or a little cheese. Because dairy does tend to be high in calories, keep your portions small or stick to low-fat varieties. (The USDA recommends that women get three cups of low-fat dairy a day.)

Do artificial sweeteners really pack on pounds?

Nutritionists debate this topic as vigorously as politicos argue about tax hikes. There’s no direct link between consuming these sweeteners and gaining weight. Still, some research indicates that by providing you with the taste of a high-calorie meal without delivering the calories your brain expects, diet foods made with chemicals, artificial sweeteners, and preservatives can actually leave you craving more food, which causes you to overeat. And another reason to tone down your diet soda habit, says Aragon: Scientists at the University of Minnesota found that diet sodas and fake sugars may increase your risk for metabolic syndrome, which results in higher levels of belly fat, blood sugar, and cholesterol. So it’s a good idea to limit your intake to three or four servings a day at most (one packet of sugar substitute in your coffee is one serving; one can of diet soda is two). If your diet otherwise consists mainly of real foods, you can enjoy a little sweetener, whether it’s artificial or not.

Will taking supplements help reveal my abs?

Most fat-loss pills are a waste of money, and many carry scary risks, says Aragon. The truth is, the fat loss caused by any supplement is minor and is even less significant in people who have a substantial amount of weight to lose, he says. The best and only real way to uncover your abs–permanently–is to focus on what you eat and how you exercise.

I always gorge after a workout. Bad habit?

This is actually the best time to have your largest meal of the day–as long as it’s a reasonable size and not a full-on feast. That’s because you’ve just reduced your body’s fuel reserves, and food can help aid your recovery. Plus, when your body is in a recovery state, incoming calories and nutrients stand a better chance of being absorbed by muscle tissue instead of being stored in fat tissue. If your goal is to curb uncontrollable hunger after a workout, try lean beef, poultry, or fish–protein-rich foods tend to be very filling. Pair that meat with whole-food, high-fiber carbohydrate sources such as beans. Fiber is another element that can help you feel satiated quickly.
